The Lumen Giving Circle is a community of women in Atlanta who believe in the power of creating safe, welcoming spaces where girls can thrive. By coming together, we are opening doors for girls to build technical skills, discover biking as a sport, and grow into confident leaders.

The name Lumen reflects what this circle is all about: illuminating opportunities for girls through the power of a bike.

Why Girls, Why Bikes?

While women make up nearly half of the workforce, only about 5% of skilled trade workers are women, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. At Bearings, we’re giving girls hands-on opportunities to learn mechanical skills that are valuable for careers in the trades and beyond.

We also invite them to explore cycling as both a sport and a source of empowerment. Research from our partners at the Georgia Cycling Association highlights just how transformative sports like cycling can be for young women: moderate levels of exercise can help girls fight depression; girls who play sports earn higher GPAs and have stronger self-confidence; and 80% of female executives at Fortune 500 companies played sports as children.
