HOSTING A BIKE DRIVE

Let’s collect bikes!

Bearings Bike Works uses bikes to teach kids that hard work, skill development, and strong relationships are the building blocks of a bright future.

Giving bikes a second life.

For the last fifteen years, Bearings has collected bikes from community members and restored them to be earned by kids in southwest Atlanta. All over our city, bikes are collecting dust in garages and basements, just waiting for a new life! By hosting a bike drive, you can engage your community to support our unique organization, not to mention give your neighbors a reason to clean out that garage!

THE POWER OF A BIKE:

What Bikes Do at Bearings

  • Bikes foster an appreciation of work.

Most kids first get involved at Bearings when they learn they can earn a bike of their own through the program! Kids get involved and can earn a bike in just a few short weeks through their own hard work.

  • Bikes provide skill development opportunities.

Kids learn how to build and fix bikes, and in the process experience the benefits that come from learning and mastering a new skill. This experience is empowering and builds confidence and self-esteem.

  • Bikes build community and relationships.

As kids engage in the Bearings community, they form relationships with others who love bikes, including positive adult role models right in their neighborhood. These relationships are vital in the growing up years for the kids we serve.

Here’s how to do it!

  • Connect it with a regular meeting time of your group or perhaps a Friday or Saturday morning.

  • We have templates to help make this easy for you!

  • Depending on the number of bikes expected, groups will often rent a U-Haul or arrange for someone with a trailer to transport the bikes to Bearings the day of the drive. Bearings will also provide information cards and tax deduction receipts to give to donors!

  • Pick up some donuts perhaps and have fun collecting bikes for Bearings. Volunteers or family members can help assist with accepting donations and providing tax receipts to donors. Enjoy connecting with community members and sharing about the exciting work Bearings is doing in southwest Atlanta.

Bikes are the lifeblood of all things Bearings. From learning opportunities to connection points, they fuel our programming every day.
